Windover Lake School. Eunice Hewett attended this school in 1908. This school was located at the North End of Windover Lake on the right or east side of the road. Picture provided by B. Schrauben
Eunice was born at Windover Lake in 1898. Her father, Edmund Gerome Hewett, and mother, Ella Betsey (Letson) Hewett, came to Lake George in 1896 or 1897. He was a lumber camp boss. Ella was the camp cook. One year, at their home, they had two orphaned bear cubs as pets, a black one and a brown one, named, predictably, Blackie and Brownie
Freeman Township was once a part of Lincoln Township. The election to seperate Lincoln from Freeman was held at the fall election in 1908, in the well house at the residence of Harry and Ellen Kress (for more information on the Kress Family click on their link at left above)
Another Windover Lake Area family is that of the Harris's. A son, Leo, wrote of his growing up in the area. His father 'shorty' first moved to Lake George and worked for the railroad and later starting farming on the south side of Mannsiding Road about a half mile east of Windover Lake. Leo attended the Windover Lake School and worked on the Golf Course at the site of the Windover Hotel. (much more on this later)
North of Windover Lake was the development of the Oil Fields. (more on this later)
